5 Basic Utensils You Need for Baking Recipes

Updated: May 24, 2021

If you're like me and you're just getting started in your baking journey, you might be asking yourself, "what are the essential tools to start baking"?. Don't worry fam—I got you.

Getting started with baking doesn't need to be hard, or expensive. These five baking utensils will get you up and running and baking it till you make it.

A measuring cup

Remember that baking isn't cooking! When it comes to my cooking, I'm the type of cook that will throw a pinch of salt in here, adding sauce, more garlic, and it goes on and on. Baking isn't quite the same. When baking, portions matter!

The first utensil you need to add to your baking tackle box is a measuring cup. This is essential to have because it not only can measure liquids but also dry ingredients. A measuring cup will save you from guessing the amount of liquid or powder needed for a recipe and having to start over again!

Don't worry about buying an expensive one—any old measuring device will do as long as it measures in both metric and US measurements.

A small bowl for beating eggs

When I started baking, I called the most knowledgable, experienced baker I know—my Grandma. She reminded me that once I started baking on the regular, I would always need eggs in the fridge. Now, living near some farms, I like to shop local. So, I prefer fresh organic eggs!

Now that you've bought your eggs, and supported your local farmer, you need a small mixing bowl to beat your eggs in. Don't worry, the bowl doesn't need to be fancy or pretty—my preference is stainless steel (it just looks cool).

An oven-safe baking dish

Most recipes require your goods to be baked in the oven. With that, you will need an oven-safe baking dish to put your deliciousness in. When shopping for your dishpan, it best to keep in mind the size of your oven and how much food you think you can put in the pan at once.

Parchment paper to line the baking dish and prevent sticking

Parchment paper to bakers is what notebooks are to authors. Parchment paper is going to save your ass (and disappointment) from having to try and dig out your goods after baking them.

Spray the parchment paper with a non-stick cooking spray

You can decide what cooking spray you want to use. I personally like to bake on the cheap, so I prefer the generic kind. If you're more of the fancy type of baker, spend the extra $.50 on Pam.

What I found with spraying parchment paper with non-stick cooking spray, is that it sticks to the cooking tray and keeps my paper from moving around.

An oven mitt

Oven mitts are a must for the well-being of those baking hands. They create a nice layer between your hot tasty treats and hands.

Don't be afraid to spend a few bucks on a good pair of oven mitts, this will be one of the best investments you make.

Now you're ready to bake!

You now know the essentials you need to get started baking some delicious goods. Find a recipe a simple recipe on Google, go to your nearest grocery store (or click on the links above) to buy your ingredients and bake it til you make it!
